Perfecting Paint for 100+ Years
Since 1891, we’ve dedicated our lives to creating paints professionals can trust. We back that up with a level of customer service that’s increasingly rare these days. Why? Because our customers have turned to us for over a century and we take that seriously.

You have questions. We have answers.
What’s the difference between latex, water-based, oil, and acrylic paints?
Water-based and oil-based paints are the two main types of paints. Water-based paints are typically more environmentally friendly and can be cleaned up with water. They’re the most popular kind of paint today. Oil-based paints are typically cleaned up and thinned with mineral spirits. They are less popular, as water-based paints have continued to improve but are still common for stains and wood-focused paints.
Latex and acrylic are both types of water-based paints. Latex is the most popular kind of resin for water-based paints. Acrylic is a version of latex, known for its high quality, durability, and great adhesion.
What is an enamel paint?
Enamels are a classification of paint. Enamels are the most durable finish, designed for trim pieces like doors and cabinets that must withstand constant use. Our enamel products include Aqua Alkyd, Duramax, and Porch & Floor.
What do I need to do to prep my surface for painting?
There are four key aspects to make sure your surface is ready for paint – clean, dull, dry, and in sound condition.
Clean means the surface is free of dirt, dust, oils, and other contaminates. If you surface isn’t clean, you’re not painting your walls, trim, etc. Instead, you are painting dirt, which leads to failure later.
Dull means the surface is not glossy or shiny. Slick, glossy surfaces do not provide a profile for the paint to fill and anchor onto while curing. If you have a surface that paint would have difficult adhering to, consider using abrasives or a bonding primer.
Dry means the surface is free of moisture. Moisture that is painted over will find its way to the surface by bubbling or pushing the paint off the surface. Consider that paint in liquid form dries to a solid film by drying and releasing moisture into the air. If the air is too humid, moisture from the liquid paint cannot enter the air to dry solid.
In sound condition means the surface is free of damage, rot, or decay that would prevent it from being prepped and painted. This is especially common issue with deck staining. Paint will not protect something that is already damaged and needs replacing.
Can I use exterior paint indoors or interior paints outdoors?
No. Do not use any paint for areas unless it specifies it can be used there. Exterior paints are often higher in VOCs and are meant to be able to cure in an open-air environment. Interior paints are not designed to withstand the elements like exterior paints and will likely fail in a short period of time. Some of our products like Aqua Alkyd, Duramax, and Duracat are designed to work in both exterior and interior settings.
